To qualify for a Retirement Visa in Thailand, applicants must meet the following requirements.

Age Requirement

Applicants must be 50 years old or above at the time of submitting the visa application.

Visa Types

  • Allows you to enter Thailand once

Financial Requirements

Applicants must demonstrate financial stability by meeting one of the following financial criteria.

Option 1: Thai Bank Deposit
  • At least THB 800,000 deposited in a Thai bank account
  • Funds must be in the account at least 2–3 months before applying
  • For visa renewals, the funds must remain in the account 3 months before and 3 months after renewal
  • Proof required:
    • Bank letter confirming the balance
    • Copies of the bank passbook (bank book)
Option 2: Monthly Income
  • A minimum monthly income of THB 65,000

In many cases, proof must be provided through:

  • Bank statements showing regular monthly deposits
  • Embassy income certification (where available)
Option 3: Combination of Savings and Income

Applicants may combine Thai bank savings and monthly income, provided the total equals at least THB 800,000 per year.

Supporting documents such as bank statements and income records will be required.

Additional Requirements

Holders of a Thailand Retirement Visa are not permitted to work in Thailand.

Depending on the visa type and embassy requirements, applicants may also need to provide:

Applying for a Retirement Visa in Thailand

If you enter Thailand using a 30-day visa exemption or a tourist visa, it is possible to apply for a Retirement Visa within Thailand.

The application should be submitted as soon as possible, as the processing time can take up to three weeks.

Applications are submitted at a Thai Immigration Office in the area where you reside.

Once approved, you can obtain a 12-month extension of stay based on retirement.

Retirement Visa Extension in Thailand

The Retirement Visa must be renewed every year if you wish to continue staying in Thailand long-term.

You can apply for your renewal up to 60 days before the visa expires.

  • Myanmar

This option is often used by people already staying in Thailand or traveling within Southeast Asia.

After receiving the Single-Entry Non-Immigrant O Visa, you can enter Thailand and apply for a 12-month retirement extension at a local immigration office within the visa validity period.

Documents Required for Retirement Visa Renewal

Applicants typically need the following documents:

TM.7 Application Form
Application for extension of stay in Thailand.

Passport
Original passport with copies of relevant pages including:

  • Photo page
  • Current visa
  • Entry stamp

Passport Photos

  • Two passport-sized photos (4×6 cm)

Proof of Residence

Financial Proof
